Under natural conditions, wheat usually self-pollinates. To introduce new sources of pollen, Borlaug and his team removed the anthers of each flower with tweezers before the flower opened. They then covered the flower to avoid unwanted pollen from the environment reaching the flower. Finally, at the appropriate time, they had to introduce the desired pollen by hand.

The anther is a part of the androecium, which produces pollen. Each pollen grain contains more than one cell. What are the cells in the pollen grain and what is the ploidy of each cell. Select all that apply.

  • A tube cell that is 2N.
  • A generative cell that is 1N.
  • Two sperm cells that are 2N.
  • A megaspore cell that is 1N.
  • Two sperm cells that are 1N.
  • A synergid cell that is 2N.
