Question: Juanita is 50-year-old women who witnessed her 25-year-old son, Junior, shot to death on her porch 5 years ago. Junior was involved in criminal activity and his killer was known to both he and Juanita as a youth that grew up in the neighborhood with Juanita and her family. The killer was killed, in gun violence, 6 months after Junior was killed. The murders were only connected in that both men were involved in criminal activity and high-risk lifestyles. Juanita has lived in her neighborhood for most of her life. Her husband, Carlos Sr, and their 2 German shepherds live in the same home she raised her 3 children in. Juanita's husband is a city bus driver and Juanita works as a nurse's aid at a nursing home. Juanita struggled after Junior's death. She suffered panic attacks when leaving the home, suffered nightmares most nights, and lost 30 pounds in 2 months. She let no one in her home and became extremely paranoid of anyone showing interest or concern. Carlos Sr suggested she seek therapy after their parish priest suggested it might be helpful. Juanita has been in trauma treatment for 2 years. In safety stage she regulated her eating and sleeping, began allowing trusted friends over for dinners, and relied on a security system to keep her property safe. She entered stage 2, 6 months previous, and has challenged many views she has on her own guilt and shame, anger toward both her son and her son's killer, as well as relearning to trust in people again. She is ready to move into stage 3: reconnection.
