Question: A graduate student studies a chemical compound commonly found as a pollutant in the environment. Previous studies reported the chemical compound carcinogenic effects, as rats injected with this compound developed tumors within four weeks. Eager to do the experiment and publish her results, the student comes to you, her adviser. 1) What would you suggest the student do before trying to publish her results? The students has available 20 laboratory rats and a vial of the chemical compound for injection. 2) Help her design a controlled experiment that includes a good hypothesis, the proper Control Group, and help her identify the Experimental Group: independent and dependent variables and some important Controlled Variables that she must keep constant in the experiment.
