The readings for week 8 discuss psychology in the workplace. For this, our final conference discussion, imagine that you are the Equal Employment Opportunity officer (EEO) in a large corporation. One of your duties is to receive and evaluate complaints and allegations from workers about unfair practices that might violate federal, state, or local laws, or company policy about discrimination on the job. In cases where there is clear evidence of job discrimination you must report this in writing to the chief executive officer (CEO) and the personnel office. One day, a 35-year-old worker, a first-generation immigrant man from Pakistan, comes into your office to complain about his supervisor in the warehouse. He complains that although he works hard and meets all job requirements as a warehouse worker, his supervisor did not promote him, instead twice promoting younger workers who have not been there as long as he has. Also, he is convinced that his supervisor and boss do not like him, perhaps because of his clothing, or his beard, or his accent. You ask him why his supervisor does not like him, and he replies that he cannot be specific, but he can tell just by the way that his supervisor looks at and talks to him, and sometimes laughs behind his back. Given only this information, answer the following questions.
