Case Study: Marsha is 36 years old. She works in a school that was built in 1958. She recently developed asthma and it seems to be getting worse. She does not smoke. She is 5'5" tall and her weight is 126lbs. She denies fevers. She considers herself pretty healthy.

Question 1: What would you consider/suspect in all patients with adult-onset asthma?

Donnie is 38 years old. She takes Lo-estrin FE 1/20-28 for birth control and she has an Albuterol HFA inhaler which in the past she mainly used for exercise and if she developed a bad cold in the winter. Now she finds that for the past month, she has been using that inhaler about 4 times a day. You decide to give her a course of Prednisone.Write the prescription below relative to how you would prescribe the Prednisone.

Question 2:

  1. What additional medication might you prescribe for her?
  2. What is a SMART inhaler?
  3. Regarding results of a spirometry test, what would you expect her FEV1 to be: increased or decreased?
  4. If Donnie were pregnant, how would you expect the pregnancy to affect her asthma?
