Thus, peak plasma concentrations are measured to ensure that the peak is high enough. Trough concentrations are then measured to ensure that most of the dose is eliminated before the next one is given. A commonly-employed target concentration for the peak is around 6 mg/L. The trough concentration before the next dose will commonly be around 0.5mg/L. The population average volume of distribution for gentamicin (Vd) is 0.8 litres per kilogram of body weight.
