As inherently social creatures, human beings are very susceptible to the influence of others on our own development, especially during formative years. We constantly learn from those around us, beginning with our families, and extending to social circles when we get older. Positive socialization is important to development of psychological constructs, such as personal identity and self-concept, including self worth, since we learn much of what we know about the world and society from interacting with others (McLean et al., 2020). Having positive examples to observe and positive interactions tends to lead to the formation of a positive view, not only of ourselves, but of society in general. However, it is important to define what a positive interaction is, and this generally depends on the social construct where one is growing up (Halim et al., 2018). Individualistic cultures tend to focus on self reliance and building a positive self-image, whereas collectivist cultures tend to focus more on the social interplay and interdependence that is the norm in that society.
