Assignment:

You are a chaplain at a local school, and you have been asked to talk to a young boy called Joe.

The teacher tells you that Joe has started bullying other children in the class. Joe has also been swearing and telling the other children how tough his dad is. Joe told one child that if he didn't give him money, his dad would come and bash him up. The teacher wants you to have a talk with Joe to see if he will open up and tell you what is happening at home.

Joe at first just shrugged his shoulders when you start talking with him. You have a dinosaur collection on your shelf and Joe asks if can look at them. He spends time looking at each one and you observe that he is starting to relax. Joe tells you that his dad is tough because he drinks beer and then hits his mum when she doesn't do what she is told. Joe said that he wants to be like his dad when he grows up. You know that a child is at risk when living in a domestic violence situation.

1. How would I demonstrate empathy, active listening skills, what would be some questions I could use to get Joe talking with me and what should I be looking at for problem solving?
