Assignment:

1. Visit the webpages found in the Learning Activities from Module:

  • What Works Clearing House
  • Youth.gov Program Directory

2. Find two programs that have similiar goals but DIFFERENT effectiveness ratings

  • Short summary of the first program you chose: who it serves, where it is, goals of the program (one paragraph)
  • What research has been conducted on the program: the research questions, if there a control group, the outcomes, if the outcomes were all significant or partially significant (half page to one page)
  • Short summary of the second program you chose: who it serves, where it is, goals of the program (one paragraph)
  • What research has been conducted on the program: the research questions, if there a control group, the outcomes, if the outcomes were all significant or partially significant (half page to one page)
  • Why do you think the research results are what they are? For example, if you chose a program rated 'effective' and has strong research outcomes, what do you think is different about that program? Consider what you have learned in this class about child development. For example, if I wrote about Homebuilders, an intensive in home family therapy program, I might hypothesize that it is effective because it is intensive (it becomes part of a child's environment: ecological systems theory) and because the amount of time a therapist spends with the family helping the parents respond to the child's behaviors (learning theory). If a program was not effect or the research is not strong, why do you think they program creators thought the program might work, and why do you think the outcomes were not as strong? (one page)
