Question: For this discussion, I want you to explore how changes in the sense of smell may become apparent in individuals at different ages. For this experiment, I want you to find 8 items/products from around your home that have strong scents; these can include herbs, spices, food extracts, fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. Please make sure to use scents that are recognizable to most people. Once you have created your "scent collection," I want you to individually ask two people who are different ages (at least 30 years apart) to identify each of the scents. To make sure they solely rely on their sense of smell, they must cover their eyes during the experiment, and they cannot touch any of the 8 items/products.

• What were the 8 items/products that you used in your "scent collection"? Why did you choose these items?
• Did your participants seem to have problems recognizing a specific scent? If so, why do you think this may be the case? If not, do you think they may have issues recognizing other scents?
• Is either of your participants a current smoker? Former smoker? Do you think this may have impacted their recognition of the different scents? If so, how?
• Did this experiment help you illustrate the developmental changes that occur in our sense of smell? If so, how? If not, why not?
