Question: Consider what ways society often perpetuates the viewing of elders as the embodiment of shame. You have an elderly patient who expresses feeling apprehensive to receive a treatment that could make her dependent on her family for quite some time. She fears losing her independence permanently and becoming a burden on her children long term or indefinitely. She is also concerned about financing the procedure and recovery. She is scared that her insurance won't take her condition and recovery seriously and the care she would get would be minimalistic and overpriced. She is certain that she does not want her family to get stuck paying her medical expenses. You know as her nurse, however, that this procedure could help her immensely in the long run. Instructions Consider the ethics around this case for your patient. She is trying to honor the four principles in who she is looking out for? How is she perceiving the four principles to conclude these results in her logic? Does she think the principles are being upheld or are they failing? The following is a helpful line of questioning to use: Does she think she has autonomy? If not, why? What would she say autonomy
