Problem: Body Language
Cultural norms seem so natural that we are often not even aware of them unless they are violated. For this discussion, watch the following documentary on Body Language available through Auraria Library to address the following questions:
I. Clearly describe any one example of body language from the documentary. Explain it assuming I/we have not seen the documentary.
II. Next, highlight how cultural norms shape our understanding of personal space (proxemics), time (chronemics), touch (haptics), and other forms of para-language (vocal pitch, volume, intonation, etc.) with reference to at least one or more example from the American culture (work, sports, gender, relation of unequal power, formal or informal setting, etc.) or from a culture you have experienced outside your own micro-culture (comfort zone and familiar space) within the United States or in another part of the world. Keep the documentary in mind when describing your example. Think of questions like what happens when you stand too close to someone or too far away. Who are you allowed to touch, where, and in what circumstances? What was the unwritten rule about personal space that was kept or broken based on your own upbringing or "American" cultural upbringing. What cultural norms were kept or broken?
