Aim - Reflective Journal Instruction
Part A - "Margin Call" is a Wall Street movie, regarded as accurately depicting certain investment bank behaviour on the edge of the global financial crisis, and ethical issues faced by financial practitioners. Please watch it and reflect on the ethical dilemma highlighted in this movie.
Part B: "It's just money", said John Tuld with utter indifference, reflects how external motives (e.g. bonus) depresses intrinsic motives (e.g. the joy of being part of financial system to support economic growth). This tension, external vs. intrinsic motivations, affect you already at university. As such, please reflect on how your motivations affect your learning in EFN425.
Structure: Situation (what?) + Interpretation (so what?) + Outcome (now what?)
Part A (Word count: 600 words, everything included): What: What was the situation faced by John Tuld?
So what: In the movie, John Tuld kept saying they did the "right" thing, but the right thing for who? Was there no other choice? Had John Tuld known about the toxic assets before the urgent meeting? What influenced his decisions from beginning to end?
Now what: what would you do if you were John Tuld? Part B (Word count: 400 words, everything included):
What: Describe your (1) most motivated and (2) least motivated moments learning EFN425.
So what: When you describe the most/least motivated moments, is it intrinsic or external motivation that you talk about? What made you motivated/demotivated?
Now what: What would you start, continue, and stop doing (1) to keep yourself motivated; (2) if you were me, the lecturer, to help you stay motivated?
