Homework

As part of this course, you are required to see live theatre productions and write a performance response papers. Be sure to carefully read and follow the homework guidelines! This is not a "review" but rather a critical response to the production you have seen. This is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your understanding of the concepts discussed within this course.

Response Paper Instructions and Guidelines

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate your ability to critically analyze a theatrical production using the concepts discussed in this course pertaining to the following areas:

1) Script/Playwrighting
2) Acting
3) Design - Scenic, Costume, Lighting, Sound

After seeing a live theatrical production, you will explore ALL the topics listed above in a personal response paper. While this paper will discuss your own opinions of the performance, keep in mind that you are to maintain an academic tone throughout. Avoid the use of "I" whenever possible. Give your opinions and impressions, but make sure to back them up with specific examples from the performance. "I liked/hated it." is not analysis. Below you will find some questions to get you thinking about these topics. You are not required to address every question. However, use these questions to assist you in formulating your own critical response to the performance you've seen.

Make sure to get a program at the performance. You'll need it to reference the appropriate artists responsible for the work you've seen by name. Make sure that you use actor and character names appropriately. Do not fail to distinguish between the two.
