Assignment
You will be conducting field research using Participant Observation. You will only approach this as a Complete/Covert Observer; due to ethical considerations, do not approach this activity as a Covert Participant and do not attempt to deliberately impact the setting, the environment, or the people that you are studying.
The environment/setting/group you choose to observe will be a place of your choice. The environment/setting/group you choose to observe can be individuals interacting at Starbucks', the library, the grocery store, on an online forum/community, the workplace, in a bar, church, mall, store, cafeteria, etc.
NOTE: Be sure to pick a place that is safe, a place that you can stay in for a period of time comfortably, and a place where conducting these observations are ethical and legal.
What you will do:
1. I want you to spend a minimum of 90 minutes observing a social setting of your choice. Take some notes (or jottings) of this setting; this will include your impressions, your thoughts, who you see, the environment, and what you see occurring.
2. Take notes of the environment, the people you observe, and any patterns that you notice.
3. You are expected to use your textbook as a source (this does mean it must be cited and referenced).
Your paper MUST contain the following elements:
1. Introduction
2. Discuss the place/setting/group that you observed and why that was chosen.
3. Provide details here, time of day, how long were you there, the weather, what does your environment look like, etc.
4. Discuss what Covert/Complete Observer is and how that applies to you.
5. What are the benefits associated with the type of participate observation used?
6. Body
7. This is where you will discuss the various things that you observed.
8. Reiterate where you chose to do your observation and provide more detail.
9. What was the general set up of the environment? What does it look like? What does it look like? What type of feeling does it give you?
10. While there, what did you see?
11. What did you notice about the people around you? How were they interacting?
12. Did you notice any patterns?
13. Was there anything of interest that really stood out to you?
