Question: Sociology should help you better understand how your life fits in with more general social trends. This assignment requires that you analyze two generations of your family. You are asked to compare your nuclear family (as it exists today) with the family of either your father or your mother (as it existed when your parent was your age). compare, you will need to interview some of your relatives including your parents and your grandparents. You should compare the two families in terms of the following:

Family composition: describe the kinship structure of each household. Speciify the ages of each family member.
Cultural heritage: what are the ethnic and religious ties of each family? How important are these ties in understanding each family?
Social class position: Specify the socioeconomic status of each parental pair. Socioeconomic status is usually measured in terms of occupational status, income and education. Would you say the intergenerational mobility has occurred?
Gender roles: What were the gender roles in each family? How and to what extent were these patterns reflected in the division of labor and authority structure of each household?
Parent-child relations: What types of parent-child relations were encouraged? What differences existed between the maternal and paternal roles? What was expected of children, and what types of discipline were employed?

Specify the procedures you employed to gather your information. What difficulties did you encounter? Keep in mind that your parents or grandparents may prefer not to share some information with you portray each family using sociological concepts like structural function and social interaction theory and to discuss changes which have occurred.
