Using this formula E = MR/I to find the young modulus
Notes on the task description are given below. The later part of the document gives information on the equipment available and the operating principles and theory for that equipment.
Task Description
1. With reference to the theory covered in your unit and the available experimental equipment, select suitable models/formulas and develop an experimental method to determine Young's Modulus and the shear modulus.
Notes:
Theory
Where have you studied Young's modulus and the shear modulus in this unit? Recall beam bending and the torsion of shafts.
What models/theory were these moduli used to analyse and how do these models apply to the available experimental equipment?
Method
Refer back to the labs that you have already completed for examples of methods
How many measurements will you need to take for a thorough analysis?
2. Carry out your experiments in the allotted lab time and gather the required data.
Notes:
Remember time is limited ensure you have a clear idea of what you need to record and how many times.
3. Analyse the data and determine the two moduli using the selected models/formulas in objective 1
Notes:
What type of analysis will give you the information required to meet the objective?
What types of analysis have you used in other lab sessions? Think about tabulated data and graphical analysis of your measured data.
4. Compare your findings with published data/standards for the given material
Notes:
Recall that there is a relationship between the values.
How scenario change if there were 1000 student in class
: The instructor suspected that the student did not use the computer for the assignment but just made up some numbers for the homework. Why was the instructor suspicious? How would this scenario change if there were 1000 students in the class?
