Written Assignment: The Contemporary Global System and U.S. Diplomacy

Write a six to eight (6-8) page research paper that addresses the following: Throughout much of the Cold War (1947-91), China, the Soviet Union and the United States used proxies to fight one another for influence over the Third World.

There were wins and losses for all three from a military perspective, but eventually they reached a relatively peaceful accommodation where the quest for power today lies primarily in how they can project their economic strength to influence others.

1. Give one example of where China, the Soviet Union and the U.S. each lost a sustained military engagement during the Cold War.

2. What role are two of these three countries playing in an area of the world of your choice -for example, the US and China in Asia, Russia and the US in the Middle East or Europe, or China and Russia in Africa?

3. Based on the most current data available, assess what the economic future looks like for either China, Russia or the US.
