Assignment Essay
REFLECTION ESSAY (Option A)
Get out your favorite album of popular music. In a clear and thoughtful, two to three page, double-spaced essay, provide a broad and insightful overview of that album, answering the questions listed in the first point below, and the larger question outlined in the second point:
• Why do you like the album?
What style/type of music does it feature?
What kind of mood does it help set for you?
Why do you think the album is as popular as it is with other people?
• Some music critics argue that music always represents a cutting-edge statement of some cultural group within society (whether it be youth in general, a certain racial group, a certain socio-economic group, etc.) Discuss whether the message in your favorite album is or is not a cutting-edge statement of a certain cultural group. Explain your answer.
REFLECTION ESSAY (Option B)
In a clear and thoughtful, two to three page, double-spaced essay, address the following topic:
Although you don't own any popular music CDs or albums, you are likely good friends with at least one person who does. Your assignment here is to undertake an interview with that person. (Try to choose someone you haven't already interviewed for this course.) Specifically, set aside a half hour or so when you can ask them the following questions regarding their favorite popular music album or CD:
1. What is their favorite popular music album?
2. Why is it their favorite?
3. What style/type of music does it feature?
4. What kind of mood does it help set for them?
5. Why do they think the album is as popular as it is with other people?
In your essay, report on the interview, and share your own reflections on their responses to your questions.
