Problem
In this situation, it is important to appreciate the fact that the RBT communicated with you about the situation. As an RBT in this situation, not having authority can make it difficult to feel comfortable addressing these types of scenarios.
In section 2 of the ethics code, some codes that are important to apply to this situation are:
Code 2.03: Protecting confidential information (BACB, 2020)-It is important for the speech pathologist and occupational therapist to be on the same page about ensuring that nothing is shared when it shouldn't be.
Code 2.04: disclosing confidential information (BACB, 2020) - just like with protecting confidential information it is important for the speech path and occupational therapist to not discuss the client and their information outside of a collaboration space where others can hear the information
Code 2.10: collaborating with colleagues (BACB, 2020) - It is important to address how the speech path and occupational therapist feel about the clients behavioral interventions and that they are on the same page as the behavior analyst so that the client can receive the best treatment to achieve their goals
Code 2.19: addressing conditions interfering with service delivery (BACB, 2020) - due to the speech path and occupational therapist not wanting to address the behavioral interventions and are negatively communicating about the behavioral interventions, there is potential for clients to pick up on it and for services to not be delivered correctly.
In order to address the situation properly, it is important to have a conversation with the speech pathologist and occupational therapist to get everybody on the same page so there can be effective collaboration. When assessing the situation with cultural humility, it is important to understand any biases you have potentially getting in your decision-making. When understanding your biases, you are able to communicate, collaborate, and consider the diverse cultures and backgrounds of others you are collaborating with and your clients.
