Assignment:
One of the main duties of a psychologist is to protect the client- and if the client is at risk of harm to themselves or someone else, it is imperative we place them on an involuntary hold to keep them safe (APA, 2022). At the cancer center, I am often called in for a consult if the oncologist feels the patient is in a mental health crisis and needs an intervention.
This LMHC responded to a crisis call from the hematology clinic. This LMHC provided supportive counseling and psychoeducation on anxiety reduction and to improve mood/well-being. The patient denied suicidal or homicidal ideation. This LMHC provided information and referrals to the Cancer Support Community and additional free supportive services. The patient reported having strong faith and a support network that includes her daughter and grandchildren. This LMHC assisted patient with expressing feelings related to the current illness and provided emotional support, reflective listening and encouragement. This LMHC encouraged patient to use mindfulness, deep breathing and relaxation techniques to help manage anxiety. This LMHC also introduced the use of positive psychology interventions to improve well-being. Due to there being no risk determined for suicide or homicide, the patient was cleared to leave the clinic. Patient was receptive to services and was appreciative of the intervention. She understands the process for making an appointment for future counseling.
