A Problem with Tables -

A rectangular table has a problem: one of its legs is missing (along with a huge chunk of the corner it was attached to), and the other legs are of different lengths. Fortunately one of the remaining legs is adjustable.

[Let L (respectively W) be the distance between the two remaining legs on the long (respectively short) edge of the table. Note that the remaining legs are arranged in a right triangle T.]

1. Suppose the leg located at the smallest angle of T is adjustable. To make the table as level as possible, what should the length of this leg be? (Your answer will be in terms of L, W, and the lengths of the other two legs.)

2. Suppose the leg located at the right angle of T is adjustable. To make the table as level as possible, what should the length of this leg be? (Your answer will be in terms of L, W, and the lengths of the other two legs.)

3. Do your answers make physical sense? Why?
