Assignment - Reflection Questions
Twice during the semester students are required to submit reflection questions one page in length.
There are several components to these reflection questions.
The question must arise from an assigned philosophy reading.
The section of text that has raised the question must be cited. You may simply cite chapter, section, or page number for longer text selections, though I would request that you quote texts shorter than a paragraph. Refer to example of a reflection question below. I will annotate the example to point out what features are required in the assignment.
The question must be stated and in bold.
Include a brief paragraph summarizing the reasons for why this question should be asked of the particular passage.
Do NOT answer the question posed.
Instead, give an apologia for its importance.
The purpose of this assignment is to sharpen the student's ability to ask questions. By defending the importance of the question rather than answering it, the student will learn how to identify crucial moves in arguments, underlying assumptions of claims, and the central ideas of texts.
This skill is vitally important. The ability to disregard ancillary claims and penetrate to the heart of an issue carries into professional, personal and civic domains.
The structure of these questions should be as follows: (i) the question is stated as clearly as possible in bold; (ii) the citation; and (iii) a brief statement about the motivation behind the question.
Sample Reflection Question - What sense of "possibility" does Descartes have in mind when he argues that his clear and distinct idea of the possibility of his existing without his body proves that his body is not an essential feature of him?
