Since the 2021 Coup, many former political prisoners from the same community of naingkyin as Pyone Cho have had to migrate out of Myanmar and take up residence on Thai-Myanmar border as displaced persons and stateless refugees. Some of these individuals have chosen to apply for asylum to the United States. This process of applying for asylum is multi-step, sometimes taking years to complete, and requires the gathering of many evidentiary documents to support the asylum- seeker's case, including a letter written to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a biographical sketch or CV of the applicant, and at least two interviews. During these interviews, the asylum seeker must recount the persecution they are facing, including any instances of torture or violence inflicted on their body. The asylum process also includes at least two medical exams by a clinic that is subsidized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to gather information about the refugee's health status. The asylum case is often strengthened if a third party (a clinic or medical doctor) can provide a medical certificate that confirms the refugee's testimony of having suffered torture. Once the refugee is accepted into the system, they are issued an ID, assigned a case manager, and await approval from various branches of the U.S. government, including the Department of Homeland Security.
