Case Study: The following scenario allows you to problem solve as the parent of an adolescent.
You discover your 16-year-old daughter has been taking prescription opioids daily for about a year. She broke her left ankle on a camping trip last summer and was given opioids as a treatment with two refills of 60 pills. She has always been a responsible child so you let her manage the medication. You assumed she took the opioids as prescribed, her injuries healed, and she was back to being a "normal" 16-year-old.
However, she has been illegally purchasing hydrocodone from other students. She has not gotten in any legal trouble yet, but a few loose pills spilled out of her purse in her bedroom. She also has been asking for $20 here-and-there, more frequently, although she works 20 hours a week, She has always managed her money with no issue. You've made a mental note, but have yet to address this behavior.
Upon finding the loose hydrocodone, there is now an opportunity to discuss your concerns. Do you approach her about the pills? How would you approach her?
