Problem
Biofloc technology will continue to have a major positive impact on shrimp farming around the world. Biofloc in systems recycle waste back into nutrients for the shrimp by adding specifically cultured microorganisms to the water. In the past, this technology was mostly relegated to universities or research labs, but more recently it is being used in many different countries (particularly in Asia and the Americas) (Emerenciano et al., 2021). Biofloc technology (BFT) is especially useful for farming shrimp in areas of the world that would be otherwise off limits to this species due to the water quality. For shrimp farming, there are some issues that need to be addressed to make BFT the go-to system for shrimp farming.
One such issue is that a lack of logistics for implementation or scaling up of operations can make adoption of the technology difficult or prohibitive. Lack of knowledge can also cause disruptions, as ongoing training of specialized techniques can be lacking. The microbial population must be carefully managed to keep the proper balance required for success. There is also the high energy cost associated with closed intensive systems. These systems have a much higher operating cost when compared to traditional earthen pond systems. Another issue is what to do with the waste that these systems produce. Because not all of the converted waste is usable by the animals in BFT, solid waste must be disposed of or, preferably, used as compost in a terrestrial farming operation. The logistics of waste disposal, the high cost and the complexity of microbial management are all hurdles that researches are constantly working to clear, but the technology shows great promise for expansion into more and more locations.
