Darius is a 47 year old African American male in treatment for esophageal cancer. He has a wife and 3 children (ages 8, 12 and 17). He was previous employed as a truck-driver but due to his cancer treatments, has not been able to work for 5 months. His employer ACME Trucking does not offer disability benefits and he has expended his FMLA protection, leading him to be let go from his job and his insurance ended, as he was not able to pay to continue his insurance. His wife works full time but the loss of the second income and the family's insurance coverage has made it difficult for the family to afford their bills. He has applied for Social Security Income and is awaiting a decision. Darius shares that he has difficulty concentrating and is not sleeping well, as he is concerned with supporting his family. He shared that his wife has noticed that he is more irritable lately and short with the children.
