Sociology Assignment

Sociology is an application-based social science. In other words, it is intended to be applied and to aid in your understanding of the social world around you.By the due date, write a short essay (1 page) on the topic below. Your essay should have an introduction, body, and conclusion.

Your essay will demonstrate an understanding of the course material plus material you find through research of other materials and its application to everyday life and/or its relationship to real-life situations.

In addition, construct a 4- to 8-slide PowerPoint presentation on the topic below. Your presentation will contain graphics and attention shown to layout and visual impact.

Find photographs and use them as part of your presentation. Photographs should be visually compelling and on topic.

Poverty is a social issue that also lends itself to the construction of graphs and tables. Please include at least one that you have constructed in your presentation.

Remember that the graphics you use should add to the power of your argument. A good photograph or table can make a point better than paragraphs of persuasive argument.

Topic:

There are many myths surrounding poverty. These myths provide misinformation on who is poor, why they are poor, and what it means to be poor. Outline these myths and the data that refute them. Are there any other myths you would add? If so, which ones and why?

When answering this question, look at how our socialization leads us to accept various myths about the poor as facts. What psychological and social factors are at work here?

What myths did you think were true? Did your research cause you to reexamine your beliefs? When constructing your presentation, be sure to add material from sources other than class material. Research and support your arguments with information gathered in your research.
