Question: The ability or inability to come to what most adults would consider to be a reasonable conclusion. When someone other than the patient (a healthcare professional, family, friend, HCPOA, etc.) makes choices for a patient based on what they believe is in the best interest of the patient or best for the patient's own good. An idea which states, the degree of paternalistic intervention justified or required is inversely proportional to the degree of autonomy present. A category of functional limitations, Eg. Getting in and out of bed, toileting, bathing, dressing, and eating. Treatment-driven programs that assist the elderly in managing their chronic illnesses. The ability to make decisions that can affect the well-being of oneself or others; taking responsibility for one's own thoughts, beliefs, and actions. Making decisions for what is best for a person when they are incapacitated or their ability to be autonomous is significantly compromised. Negative or judgmental perceptions toward older adults based on their age.
