Problem
Chen, an 8-year-old boy, has trouble staying in his seat in class. To increase his in-seat behavior, a token board economy system will be implemented. The behavior analyst would like to see which token, such as Spider-Man, happy face, or poker chip, would be most effective in maintaining this behavior.
The best option to determine which token would be most effective would be the alternating treatment design (ATD). An ATD lets us compare two or more interventions by alternating them quickly within a study (Cooper et al., 2020). According to Richards (2019), extraneous variables are minimized using this design, data can be analyzed quickly, and severe behaviors can be addressed more quickly because there is no intervention withdrawal.
While there are limitations to this design, possible multiple treatment interference, ineffective with irreversible behaviors, and not ideal for behaviors that need long-term intervention (Richards, 2019), for this case the only limitation that applies is multiple treatment interference.
