1. In this discussion board, you and your group members will share examples of discipline-specific communication and consider what makes them appropriate for an audience of professionals. There are two parts to this discussion board.
Your first post will include:
A 150-250 word example of an expert's communication in your field -- it can be written text, audio, or video. The author/speaker must be an established professional in the field communicating to other professionals in the field. The piece of communication should be directed towards peer professionals or those with a significant knowledge of the field, not a general audience.
2. An excerpt is a piece of text as-is. Therefore, if you are providing an excerpt from a text, you will copy and paste those 150-250 words into the body of your discussion post. For Part 1, you won't be including the citation information since you don't want to give your classmates clues about what field it is. For example, if the article comes from the Journal of Basket Weaving, your classmates will know that your field is basket-weaving. In Part 3, you can provide the source.
Your next post(s) will include:
a response to three (3) group members' first posts answering these questions
what field/discipline do you think it's from?
do you understand it? if yes, why do you think you understand it? (maybe you're in the same or a similar field?)
give a specific example of a barrier to your understanding (terminology? sentence structure? something else?)
a short introduction of yourself (like greeting, name, field/area of interest, future goals, etc.)
Suggestions for success:
For part 1, try looking for trade or scholarly publications in the field or ask someone you know in the field for a short example (don't forget to get the source!). As a last resort, google "examples of writing in [your field here]".
Read the responses to your first post and address the barriers in your edit.
