Writing Guidelines - This is a course on typography and words. Letters are visual symbols that form patterns that convey complex ideas. We refer to this as "writing", "reading" and "typography". Reading and writing about design form an important part of this course. By this point in your CSULA career you are expected to be effective writers.

In your writing you are to demonstrate your ability to critically analyze, interpret and evaluate current ideas and the art and design research that you've done to this point. You should be able to draw upon a growing knowledge that you are developing in your option area of Graphic Design/Visual Communication.

You are to write two thoughtful, expository essays in response to local design events, activities or exhibitions that you attend, according to the course schedule. These papers are to be one well-developed page, in length. Writing is due at the beginning of class when it is due-do not plan on printing it out after class begins. Come to class with your paper already printed, and ready to turn in. No credit will be awarded for poor writing, or writing that is turned in late.

In general when you write for this course, you are to write in response to an event or an exhibition or experience-NOT A REPORT. Make your case. State your position and write an organized essay that persuasively and logically (not emotionally) makes your point. You are a thinking designer with an informed and articulate point of view. Demonstrate this through your writing.

You writing is to be thoughtful, effectively organized, fully and specifically developed, and stylistically effective. You should demonstrate superior control of language, including diction, phrasing, and syntactic variety. Your writing should always avoid serious errors in mechanics, grammar, and usage. Do not write in the first person.

What is your thesis? Pick one topic, and make your argument. You may very briefly quote a presenter or a source, but only to support your own original thought, and position. Please organize your original thoughts carefully.

It is your responsibility to understand and avoid plagiarism, and to always properly cite your sources. If you have concerns or questions, consult the Academic Honesty Policy, and/or the instructor before turning your work in. Students found to be in violation of the University Academic Honesty Policy will earn 0 points for the assignment where the violation is committed. Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, an "F" may also be assigned for the course. The University may impose additional administrative sanctions.

LENGTH - LA Design essays are to be ONE full PAGE and Project Briefs have no limit, as long as they contain all the information pertaining to the project. FORMAT - Essays should have margins set at .75 inches on all sides, and use 10pt Helvetica or Arial single-spaced. That's 10pt type on 10pt leading (10/10). In the upper right hand corner of the paper put your name on the top line. The date and course number should be on the second line. On the third line put a descriptive title. Do not indent the first line of the first paragraph. If you indent paragraphs, don't skip lines. If you skip lines, don't indent paragraphs–it is redundant.
