Question: Michael Phillips is the star swimmer on the Goleta State swim team. Michael, a sophomore, is 6'5", 203 pounds. Michael has been swimming competitively since age five. Michael's strongest stroke is butterfly, swimming a personal best 1:41.26 at this year's NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Georgia.
For many years Michael has struggled silently with her gender identity. While born male she has identified as female since before she began swimming. Earlier this week, after many long conversations with her family, Michael made the very personal decision to 'come out' and transition permanently to be in accord with her internal sense of gender. As part of that decision she also has decided to undergo sex reassignment therapy, including hormone replacement therapy. She has also decided to formerly change her name to Michelle.
While Michelle has struggled tremendously with the public aspects of her gender identity she has never wavered in her love of swimming. She finds it intensely rewarding and tells her friends that the only time she finds true peace is when she is in the water. Understandably she wants to continue to compete and with her coach's support approached the athletic director of Goleta State to inform him of her transgender status and desire to compete on the college's women's team.
You (and your team) are the athletic director of Goleta State and have just heard Michele's request. After telling her you understand her desires and pledging your support, you let her know you will work with the college, the coaching staffs and her to help her achieve her goal. Your next step is to identify the issues to be addressed in this case, the individuals and groups involved and to put together a plan to help Michele continue her swimming career at Goleta State as a female.
