The example of civil disobedience I chose for this discussion is the Greensboro sit-ins of 1960. This event involved four Black college students performing a non-violent protest by sitting at a segregated store and requesting service. This eventually grew into a larger movement where more people would perform sit-ins, exposing the injustice of segregation. The ethical issue that caused these sit-ins is racial discrimination. People of color were not allowed to go to the same places as whites were, and often had their dignity and rights compromised by unjust laws. While it was illegal for these four men to sit-in at a segregated store, it is a morally right and responsible thing to challenge a system that oppresses people based on immutable traits. In the same vein, I agree with the method and actions taken: they are peaceful, justified and civil in nature. A solution that dresses this issue would simply be the dissolution of these segregation laws. This would protect civil rights, uplift Black Americans, give the businesses previously only serving whites more customers, and overall give greater cohesion to society.
