Question: MR is an 80 yo male who presents with severe dyspnea. He is breathing about 42 RPM. He has a history of COPD. Physical assessment reveals a barrel shaped chest. the trachea is deviated to the left and there are decreased breath sounds on the left side of the chest but with hyperresonance on percussion. ABGs return with pH of 7.28, pO2 of 78mmHg, pCO2 of 52, and BE -6.2. Hb is 10.8.

The pulmonologist orders PFTs and the patient is very anxious about having to have "another test"
