PART ONE
Referring to the reading for this week, please respond to one of the prompts below:
Question 1. What is wrong with the current global energy system? Why is the development of "alternative" or renewable energy sources only a partial solution to energy sustainability and climate change resilience? Consider the IPPC 1.5 degree climate change report section on tradeoffs and synergies: Can you think of a way that energy justice strategies would actually lead to more synergies (multiple positive effects for multiple groups) and actually reduce trade-offs (having to choose between meeting our energy needs and mitigating climate change).
Question 2. Using your own words (try putting the readings away for a minute), try to define the core tenets of energy justice: 1) distribution; 2) recognition; and 3) procedures. Give a 1 sentence or phrase example of each.
Question 3. In 4-5 sentences, explain what global energy justice is and how it ties into sustainable development and sustainable communities (and cities).
Question 4. Post a link to some media that you read or watched that relates to the readings. Write 1-2 paragraphs describing the what the clip or article is about and how you connect it to what you read.
Question 5. Compose and answer your own prompt that matches the quality of questions and responses required from above. This option is for when you got something out of the reading that you want to write about, but that I did not ask about.
PART TWO
Read two short news articles from last week:
From the New York Times: Texas Storms, California Heat Waves an Vulnerable Cities by Ivan Penn.
From the New Yorker magazine: Blaming the Wind for the Mess in Texas is Painfully Absurd by Bill McKibben.
Written response: Very briefly, comment on California's and Texas's energy systems. Write about whatever you found most interesting related to this course.
