1. In what ways do you see the postmodern approaches as having some different assumptions about clients and about counseling than most of the previous therapy approaches you have studied?  What are some different key concepts?

2. What is the value of asking clients to talk about the exceptions to their problems and to adopt a positive focus on what they are doing that is working in their lives?  If a therapy practice is built on the notion of helping clients recognize their strengths and resources, what implications does this have for both the client and the therapist?

3. Solution-focused therapists often ask clients the miracle question. What potential value is there in asking clients to imagine their problems will vanish one night when they were asleep?  How does the miracle question enable clients to ways of creating solutions?  Are there any problems with using the miracle question technique?

4. Both narrative therapists and solution-focused therapists are very concerned with establishing truly collaborative relationships with their clients.  Clients are co-creators of solutions and are co-authors in the process of re-authoring their life stories. What are some specific steps a therapist can take early in the course of therapy to establish this collaborative partnership?  What if the client does not want to be a partner, but instead expects the therapist to be the expert?
