Respond with a post in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations. This post should answer and discuss the question given: "What is the truth behind cinema's portrayal of ancient Egypt". What is Egyptians influence in popular culture; Modern world? Why and how does an ancient culture hold our fascination and imagination? Why is Hollywood obsessed with Ancient Egypt? Or better yet: Why does Hollywood Continuing to Whitewash Ancient Egyptian History?
In addition, discuss how objects in the museum differ from the objects in their original contexts. For example, what does it mean to view funerary objects in a museum, as opposed to within sealed tombs that were never meant to be seen by the public?
This topic and discussion is relevant due to the fact that cinema is such a large part of our modern culture, particularly in the United States. Millions of people use cinema as a basis for their knowledge and will believe many of the images that are put in front of them. Dissect what's real and not real will give a better understanding of true Ancient Egyptian society to yourself and your peers who have been bombarded by the media's portrayal of ancient Egypt for our whole lives.
This topic is also particularly interesting because of its impact on our lives. Walking into a Survey of Art History course, many students know/knew very little about ancient Egypt, and much of what students know (if not all) has come from cinema. Hopefully, this discussion and Chapter on Ancient Egypt will give some true insight of Egypt that, to me, is far more fascinating than the media's portrayal of ancient Egypt.
The goal of this discussion is to establish the differences between perception and reality of modern understanding of ancient Egypt through cinema.
