The highest numbers of nosocomial infections in the NNIS occur in surgical and medicine services. The coliforms and Proteus were responsible for 46% of urinary tract and 24% of surgical site infections, 17% of the bacteremias, and 30% of the pneumonias from 1990 through 1992.
