Case: PTSD is a psychiatric disorder which develops due to catastrophic traumatic events. It has been discovered that violent attacks, natural disasters, and occupational stress can lead to PTSD (Li et al., 2021). As mentioned, studies have shown that chronic exposure of traumatic events has caused-development of mental disorders, and it has been determined that PTSD among ICU nurses has multi factorial causes. Long term exposure of dealing with traumatic events, such cardiopulmonary resuscitations, and increased workload are two major contributors to PTSD among ICU nurses. Hospitals can support their ICU nurses by providing "CBT which aims at modifying inaccurate and irrational cognitions" (Fadaei et al., 2020, p. 178). In turn, PTSD in ICU nurses has led to major negative patient and organizational outcomes. While studies have shown a positive relationship between the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in conjunction with increased staffing and prevention of PTSD among ICU nurses, PTSD remains a persistent issue in ICU. The issue of ongoing shortage of nurses on the ICU is a phenomenon that has been long known in causing negative patient outcomes, as well as having negative health outcomes among ICU nurses (Vincent et al., 2022). Additionally, there is limited literature that shows comparative data between the number of ICU nurses who develop PTSD in hospitals where CBT is not used versus number of ICU nurse who develop PTSD in hospitals where CBT is used.
Finally, a significant factor in preventing chronic stress leading to PTSD among ICU nurses can be having support from organizational leaders. Organizational changes could include increased staffing and offering cognitive behavioral therapy to ICU nurses.
