Assignment: Literature Review

This assignment is regarding physical education, sports. and exercise science. Journals have to be in the sport/ exercise field.

Students will also complete a Literature Review. ). The topic should be narrow in scope. These readings, a minimum of five articles, will be found in professional journals, one of which may be from Assignment 1(B). Students will summarize the articles and synthesize the topic chosen. This assignment will serve as a fuller introduction to the scholarly material that you would be reading and "living" should you choose the profession. (See instructions for assignment).

Notice that a first draft will be due part of the way into the semester. I will return and provide feedback on this draft, with enough time for you to complete the final draft (actual paper), due later in the semester.

A literature review is a text of a scholarly paper that includes the current knowledge and important findings, as well as theoretical and methodological contributions, about a particular topic. Literature reviews are secondary sources, and do not report new or original experimental work.

So, what does it mean to summarize? It means to tell the information again in fewer words. It can be challenging to accomplish this while keeping all the important points of the article!

What does it mean to synthesize? It means to produce or make something by using or combining different things. In our case, therefore, you'll need to produce a paper that specifically explains the topic, using information from all of the sources. Your introductory paragraph could explain what topic has been chosen and why. You don't need a thesis statement.

As you write the paper, do not summarize each article on its own. Rather, discuss the topic integrating parts of each article as appropriate, or at the right time. Back up or be able to substantiate a statement you make using information contained in the articles, the text, and our discussions. Your conclusion will reinforce what you wrote in the paper, while you share potential new directions that the topic can be researched.
