Media Analysis Using Sociology

You will choose a piece of media to analyze in a Sociological context.

Step I: Choose a tv show, movie, novel, video game, comic book, or any other fictional piece of media.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

You cannot use a documentary or anything too close to real life, the point is to analyze a fictional setting
If you choose a TV show you might want to select one episode or a certain theme/relationship
Other types of media are fine but clear them with me via email first

Step II: Find three topics/concepts you want to use to analyze the media.

For example: toxic masculinity, incarceration & recidivism, structural racism, socialization, the self

Write up the following outline. It can be in the exact format below:

I. Specify the Media: Give the name of the media you chose and write two to five sentences giving some background about the media. What kind of media is it? What is the overall plot or setting?

II. Topic I: Name the topic and write about three sentences sharing what you know about the topic. This can include a definition of the topic in my own words but also an explanation of the concept as it relates to society. Feel free to include a quote from a reading but refer to where it came from and do not include it in your two to three sentence count. Give a brief example of why this is relevant for the media you chose.

III. Topic II: Same as above
