Objective
Now that you have a broad understanding of the topics of sex, gender, sexuality and aging that sociologists are interested in, you can now explore one of these topics deeper by evaluating a professional research study.
Instructions
For this discussion, you will read, discuss, and evaluate a professional research article (a published research study) related to any topics we have discussed in class this week (you choose what you want to explore further). You will use the virtual school library to find an article (see below) or sites like Google Scholar. There are specific sections covered in professional research articles and your task is to briefly summarize and evaluate in 2-3 paragraphs these main components. These include: a statement of the problem/research question, literature review (previous research on the topic), introduction to the current study, research design (research method), conclusions/findings, and, your criticisms/comments of the study. Note: this needs to be a study (with a research method and results--see our chapter on research) not just an article discussing topics...you will not earn full credit.
Cite the article using proper ASA/APA formatting and paraphrase in your own words. What is the title of the article? Who is (are) the author(s) of the article? What is the name of the professional journal the article was published in? What was the date of publication? Use paragraph form (no subheadings).
Please see the Online Orientation Module for directions to find articles in the Saddleback College online library or sites like Google Scholar. Finding a research study is different than searching google for an "article" that discusses a topic. Please follow the instructions below so you can find the correct type here.
