The Cast Oil-Field FittingA cast iron, T-type fitting is being produced for the oil drilling industry, using an air-set or no-bake sand for both the mold and the core. A silica sand has been used in combination with a catalyzed alkyd-oil/urethane binder. The figure shows a cross section of the mold with the core in place
(a) and a cross section of the finished casting
(b). The final casting contains several significant defects. Gas bubbles are observed in the bottom section of the horizontal tee. A penetration defect is observed near the bottom of the inside diameter, and there is an enlargement of the casting at location C.
1. What is the most likely source of the gas bubbles? Why are they present only at the location noted? What might you recommend as a solution?
Apply basic concepts of solid mechanics, e.g. displacement field, strain and stress tensors. The displacement ???? in a second-order (quadratic) element is calculated from the FEA of static analysis of a linear elastic, isotropic, homogeneous soli..
Concrete, rocks, and bone are strong in compression and are usually designed for compressive loading. To test their strength in compression, what sort of test specimen would be useful?
Determine the average heat transfer coefficient for the plate when its temperature is 15°C by two methods: using results from the similarity solution to the boundary layer equations, and using results from an empirical correlation.
Find the maximum axial compressive service loads that the column of cross section shown can carry. The column is short. Assume that the service dead load and live load are equal.
Report your conclusions of the Lab. Explain the low efficiency of the gun. How could the gun be modified to improve efficiency? How could your calculations have better predicted actual results?
Using the parameters of the 50-hp induction motor set forth in this chapter, plot the ratio of power loss divided by torque and the corresponding value of the magnitude of the air-gap flux as a function of slip frequency ωs.
A living plant leaf is an open system that exchanges energy (sunlight and thermal flows) + matter (O2, CO2, water vapor, etc.) with the surroundings (the exterior). Even with irreversible processes (energy dissipation) we find that the net entropy ch..
During daily operation the air inlet temperature is not controllable and may vary from 27 to 38°C. If the heat exchanger area is fixed by the result of part (a), what is the range of air velocities needed to maintain the prescribed condensation ra..
a certain hydraulic system operates at 20.0 mpa. compute the percentage change in the volume of the oil in the system
this comes from the book fundamentals of engineering thermodynamics authors michael j. moran and howard n. shapiro 6th
over a certain temperature interval the saturation pressure-temperature curve of a substance is represented by an
A relief valve is installed on the bottom of a pressure vessel. The entrance to the valve is 4.5 inches diameter, and the exit (which discharges in the horizontal direction, 90 degrees from the entrance) is 5 inches in diameter. The loss coefficient ..
