Question: You need to write 4 journal enterires in 4 different files. It's for an autobiographical essay. It is a memoir: an autobiographical essay in which you tell the story of an important event or experience in your life and reveal, through narration and description and analysis, the significance of that event or experience. You can pick any topic. What is all this journal writing? We will spend a few weeks on "invention writing," which will help you discover a worthy topic and probe your memory for significance and insight. We will do the invention writing through a series of guided journal entries. These journals are the most important stage of the writing process because its where you will do most of your thinking. Students often compose essays without first thinking about them. We tend to write before we know what we want to say because we have a deadline and want to get the assignment done so we can move on to other responsibilities. But this course is purposefully designed to give you plenty of time in the invention stage so that, before you begin writing your essay, you have put in the hard work of finding a great story to tell, of understanding its significance, and of finding how it will resonate with your readers; after that, the writing process is all about crafting your ideas into a flowing, vivid, entertaining, insightful essay. You will feel much better about writing when you have a trove of details and insights to put into your essay.This Invention Journal is the most important stage of writing this essay. I am giving you a lot of time to work in the invention stage, so take advantage of this time and write as much as you can. For most of the journal entries you will write for 40 straight minutes.

It's important to keep this in mind: Journal-writing is not essay-writing. For the journals, you are writing for yourself and for the purpose of generating/inventing ideas. It's a place where you search and discover. The essay is where you will carefully select and organize and carefully articulate the ideas that you invent in your journals.

To get started, see the journal entry assignments below. You will see that there are 5 total entries and that we will complete these entries one at a time over a stretch of time (look at the calendar of assignments to see the journal entry due dates)--don't complete them all at once. You will want time in between them to let your subconscious work on the ideas. I've attached files for all four enteries, please have a look for ideas. Journal entry 4 is thesis journal.
