You have just discovered a strange chemical found in a plant the people of the Amazon have been eating. Up until recently this plant has been a staple of the people's diet but lately people are getting sick and some are dying after eating it. You have discovered that some of the plants are making a chemical not found in the plants in years prior. This chemical binds to Cytochrome c and blocks the cytochrome from performing its' normal job.

a) Explain how this chemical could be interfering with normal metabolic processes to cause sickness and even death in people who ate these plants. Describe the affects and effects at the molecular level. ie what is the molecular consequence of this toxin?

b) What do you think happened (on a general level) to lead to the appearance of this newcharacteristic?
