Term Paper - Enterprise Applications of Business Intelligence
Overview:
This project is meant to allow you to drill deeper into the course topics on your own and to gain greater depth of knowledge than can be discovered in one chapter or one week of class. Therefore, your term paper topic will be a subset of the broader knowledge area.
Structure of Paper:
• Start with an introduction to provide a paragraph about the purpose of the paper and why it is important to BI/A.
• Include any information on the state of this topic and any evolution of progress within the last 5 - 10 years. This might include industry reports or white papers, publications in industry related journals, or consultant reports like those from Gartner, TDWI, etc. You should not use blogs or website verbiage. I have given you a list of helpful websites the first week of class that you should draw on first.
• Include the major issues surrounding the use/implementation/management of the topic. This may include published examples of detriments when poorly used or ignored and examples of benefits when properly implemented.
• Include major obstacles or impediments to the use/implementation/ management of the topic.
• Include, if appropriate, any software that might facilitate the use/implementation/management of the topic. (This won't apply to all topics.) In this section, you also need to include a list of the top vendors for the software.
• Include anything else that you find useful in learning about this topic.
• Provide a summary and conclusions section that summarizes your paper in a paragraph or two and provides your thoughts for the future of this topic in another paragraph or two.
Format of Paper:
• The paper should be 10 - 12 pages (exclusive of cover page, reference list, and any figures or tables you might choose to use).
• It must be double spaced with 1 inch margins all around.
• I prefer Times New Roman 12 point font. If you use
a different font, it should be about the same size.
• There is 1 paper per team. There will be only 1 grade per paper, so each team member will receive the same grade for their team's paper.
• The paper must have a cover page with the topic and both team members listed. This page is not counted in the 10 -12 pages in #1 above.
• References
• There is no set number of papers you must cite, but in a 10 - 12 page paper, I'd imagine you'll cite at least 10.
• I don't have a specific style for formatting references in mind, but it should be consistent within your paper. It should also be one of the widely accepted styles such as APA or Chicago.

Examples of modern data visualization tools will also be discussed, including current vendors, what the products they offer, how those data visualization tools can connect to different types of data warehouses, and a brief comparison of vendors offering those data visualization tools. Additionally, different industry uses of data visualization tools with the advantages and disadvantages of those tools will also be discussed. Finally, a discussion regarding the implementation and the future of data visualization tools within the workplace.
Aims
The following is a list of questions Group 10 intends on addressing with the research project:
- What is the history of data visualization applications?
- Who arc the major vendors of data visualization tools, and what products do they offer? - How can data visualization tools be used in the workplace today?

For the actual research project submission, the list above may have additions or deletions after further analysis of the data and research articles collected.
Methodology
Group 10 intends on retrieving peer reviewed papers and relevant articles to address the questions stated above. Briefly describing the evolution of data visualization tools will provide insight as to how much advancement has been made in recent years and could give better insight regarding the future of data visualization tools in the workplace. Real life examples of businesses employing data visualization tools into their organizations and the results from the implementation of the tools will serve as a good reference point to support the answers for the questions above. For example, a case study of the company Hello Fresh and their use of data visualization tools will be analyzed.
