Scenario
September 1st, 2021 - The medical examiner has concluded that Mr. Andrew Wang, his sister Caroline and Jennifer Bird died of hypoxia. The exact cause of the hypoxia is unknown. The medical examiner also reported that tissue samples of the heart, lungs and liver showed massive cell death and significant mitochondrial damage. All three patients had abnormally high levels of oxygen in their blood. The average amount of oxygen in each patient's blood was 110 mm of Hg. Normal range is 75 - 100 mm of Hg. DNA sequencing of Mr. Andrew Wang reveals that he was negative for any mutations known to cause Brugada syndrome.
Questions
1. Explain what is hypoxia?
2. What are some causes of hypoxia?
3. What is the function of mitochondria?
4. Hypoxia is classified based on cause. There are 4 types of hypoxia - Anemic hypoxia, Ischemic hypoxia, Histotoxic hypoxia and Hypoxemic hypoxia (Page 852 of 11th edition Text describes the 4 types of hypoxia). Based on the medical examiners find that blood oxygen levels were abnormally high which type of hypoxia is most likely to have caused the deaths of Mr. Andrew Wang, Caroline Wang and Jennifer Bird? Explain your reasoning.
5. What do you think caused the hypoxia in Mr. Andrew Wang, Caroline Wang and Jennifer Bird?
It is a very curcial concept to understand how the immune response is mounted against viruses, bacteria, protozoans and helminthes. For an effective immune response, both innate and adaptive immunity should work together.
