Conservation Ethics and Law Assignment Questions -

1. What is 'the environment'? Is it 'nature' or 'resource'?

3. How important do you think biodiversity is, especially in the human habitat, be it urban, suburban, or rural, and why?

5. In what ways would the current international legal regime governing the environment, especially the principles and concepts of law developed under the regime of international environmental law be important in promoting the conservation of biodiversity, and of nature, at the local level?

6. Would 'nature' be considered to be "in a filthy and unwholesome state or overgrown with rank or noisome vegetation" if it is left to grow as nature wants it to grow?

Please provide sufficient explanation and justification, with reference to established literature on the subject matter to support your opinion and argument. If necessary, students are encouraged to use illustrations, diagrams, pictures and other means to support and elaborate their assertions.

Group Presentation - The Presentation should consist of these components:

a. A title. Students should give the assignment a title that suits the direction in which this assignment is/planned to be explored;

b. An analysis and the interpretation of the issues raised in the assignment;

c. An explanation of how these questions would be answered (the methodology developed for this assignment);

d. Literature Review and progress report; and

e. References.

1. The front page of the assignment shall clearly state the code and name of the course, the name of the student, his or her matriculation number and the word count of the written assignment.

2. The length of the assignment must be between 2,500 to 5,000 words.

Word limit – 2800 words. The assignment developed for the purpose of continuous assessment is divided into two parts: a presentation in groups and the submission of an individual written assignment. Group Presentation (10%) - The Presentation should consist of these components: A title. Students should give the assignment a title that suits the direction in which this assignment is/planned to be explored; An analysis and the interpretation of the issues raised in the assignment; An explanation of how these questions would be answered (the methodology developed for this assignment); Literature Review and progress report; and References. Students are advised to form a group of 3 – 4 persons in preparation for the presentation. The names and matriculation numbers of all the members of the group must be clearly stated on the first page of the presentation slides. The time allocated for each presentation is 30 minutes. Everybody must present.

Individual Written Assignment (20%) - The front page of the assignment shall clearly state the code and name of the course, the name of the student, his or her matriculation number and the word count of the written assignment. The length of the assignment must be between 2,500 to 5,000 words. ONLY the soft copy of the assignment should be submitted, preferably in PDF format. The file should be labelled with the student’s matriculation number ONLY. No hard copy is necessary. Students are advised to use black ink, Times New Roman, 12pt size, and to justify text on a page. The assignment must be paginated, with the total number of words, excluding footnotes, endnotes, references, and table of content (if any) stated clearly on the cover page. The students are advised to use the standard cover page for assignments. All references or quotations shall be properly and consistently cited. Students are encouraged to use UKM citation style.
