A typical power plant uses some fuel as the source of heat (QH) to drive a heat engine that does work (W) to drive a generator that is connected to the electrical grid. Inevitably, waste heat (QC) is dumped into a river or lake. Analysis of the plant is usually done in terms of power rather than energy. To analyze the cooling system rate of flow is used. What is the efficiency and how do we express this in power?
